How can we tell what is learned?
I think the issue of assessment in PE is an interesting issue because of the wide variety of ideas regarding grading. Many people who experienced PE in generations past believe that an A-grade is deserved for simply dressing for class and being punctual. Other contemporary teachers believe grades should be given for varying class aspects, such as participation, progress, skill presentation, or meeting pre-determined sport or fitness standards. To me, these methods really can be put into two categories: objective and subjective assessments.
In my classroom, I focus on objective assessments. For every skill I teach and grade, I include an objective checklist of key aspects of that skill, as well as a simple diagram to display the skill. These would take the form of handouts given before each lesson, and the assessment of these skills would take the form of a grading rubric. As I teach, I collect data on the progress and relevant statistics regarding each lesson, and then use it to compile graphs, or other media, to display evidence of progress and improvement for both individuals and classes as a whole.
