PE in the electronic age.
Technology in the PE classroom can be an invaluable tool for data recording and assessment. The inclusion of technology can be as simple as playing music for the students to increase their motivation, or as sophisticated as an online activity tracker. From a simple stopwatch, to heart-rate monitors, to comprehensive online exercise trackers, technology allows me to track the physical activity of my students. I use these types of devices to track the participation and progress of my students. The data I get from reading these devices can be easily kept and reviewed to see how students improve over time, and to recognize those students who have shown the most improvement, even if those students are not the most athletic.
I use this to augment my ability to assess student participation and to offer a more in-depth understanding of the material presented in class. For example, asking the students to jog one mile can be enhanced by giving an additional condition to keep the heart rate above 130bpm with the use of a monitor, and then I can plot calories burned with the use of an online calorie-expenditure calculator. Students can also use online sites to track progress and design personal exercise plans, and to research what health decisions may be best for them under my supervision.
