“This warm-up is going to involve running and catching. Everyone get into 5 lanes along these lines on the ground (indicate lines). The 2nd person in line is going to take a volleyball and throw it high up in the air along the lane, and the first person is going to run out, get it, and run to the back of the line and hand the ball to the next 2nd person to throw to the next runner.”
Est. Time
20 min.
Activity Title
Pass-Ball
Class Organization
Class will be randomly divided into 2 teams. The class will choose their own team names by vote.
Teaching Points
“The game Pass-ball is all about passing and juggling the volleyball. To move in this game, you need to constantly use a volleyball set technique to juggle the ball above your head, you cannot hold the ball and move. If you hold the ball, you cannot move and must pass to a team mate. The court is divided into 4 zones also; to advance up by 1 zone, you must pass the ball to every player on the team at least 1 time. To score a point, you must advance to the opponents last zone and pass the ball to every player on your team. The other team, however, will be defending by trying to pick-off your passes, and swat-away your overhead juggles. If you drop the ball or don’t catch the ball, the ball is turned over to the other team in the defending zone or 1 zone back. If an opponent swats the ball away, it is a fumble and the ball can be recovered by either team in the same zone. If you move while holding the ball or bump another player, it is a rush penalty and you get a reset on the number of times passed. ”
Est. Time
8 min.
Activity Title
Cool-Down
Class Organization
Class will form a staggered semi-circle around the instructor after all equipment has been organized and put away.
Teaching Points
“What strategies did you have to score in this game?”
“Was it easier to move forward and juggle or to pass the ball as much as possible?”
“Did it get easier to handle the volleyball as time went on? Why?”
Lesson Modifications (Illness and/or Students with Disabilities)
Students who are very sick and cannot do vigorous activity will be separated and allowed to play normal volleyball at their own pace. If there are too few for volleyball, they will practice the set, serve, and bump at their own pace against a wall.
1 student is deaf and will be given extra modeling of the skill and will be given written instructions on how to play Pass-ball to read the day prior to class.
1 student has knee injury and can only walk slowly. He will be given an “arms-distance” handicap where defenders cannot come inside of “arms distance” to him when he receives or passes the ball.
